Dragon Fin Soup Hits PS4, PS3 & PS Vita Tuesday, Free for PS Plus

Hey, everyone! It’s finally time! After three long years of nonstop development by five indie developers, Dragon Fin Soup is finally ready to be served! For those of you who haven’t heard of Dragon Fin Soup, you can check out our previous PS Blog posts here and here, or just let us give you a refresher :)

Dragon Fin Soup

Dragon Fin Soup is a tactical-action RPG with roguelike elements set in a twisted tongue-in-cheek fairytale world. Inspired by those ingredients, the game features a 2D top-down camera and fluid turn-based movement that allows you to set the pace.

Dragon Fin Soup seamlessly blends genres to create a fresh experience: half story-driven tactical RPG and half high-stakes roguelike, with a pinch of crass humor and a heaping helping of murder & madness set in a procedurally generated fantasy world.

Dragon Fin Soup

Dragon Fin SoupDragon Fin Soup

Meet Red Robin, a charming, raging alcoholic bounty hunter who would rather get into a bar fight than deliver baked goods. Players must take up Robin’s blades and set out across Asura — a lushly colorful, fantasy world that sits on the back of an enormous space turtle — on a journey to discover the secrets of her bloody past.

Warning: This game is not for the casual player and can be highly addictive! We really went overboard with Dragon Fin Soup and threw in everything we found fun:

  • Superfluid turn-based tactical combat
  • Raging alcoholic bounty hunter heroine
  • Traces of dark majesty from the original Grimm tales
  • New procedurally-generated world each time you play
  • Mercenaries for hire and awesome pets to collect
  • Over 60+ hours of gameplay in Story, Survival, and Labyrinth modes
  • Gorgeous 2D world, all created by award winning artist Randis Albion

Dragon Fin Soup is the first of what we hope to be many RPGs we create and share with you. With your patronage and support we will continue to expand the world of Dragon Fin Soup and listen to your feedback.

To show our everlasting appreciation, enjoy these HD wallpapers painted by Randis Albion!
You can download them here.

We are very excited to finally be launching our baby and hope you enjoy Dragon Fin Soup as much as we enjoyed making it.

If you’re on the fence as to whether Dragon Fin Soup is right for you, have no fear! Here is a candid in-depth gameplay showcase from PAX Rising 2015.

PS Plus: Free Games for November 2015

Drama. Magic. Zombies. Magic zombies? Maybe not that last one, but we’ve got the other three in spades with our new free games coming to PlayStation Plus. So without further ado, here are your PS Plus games for November!

PlayStation Plus November 2015 Lineup

Leading the (zombie) pack is critically acclaimed The Walking Dead: Season Two on PS4, by the expert storytellers at Telltale Games. Guide her actions and influence the game’s outcome as nail-biting choices must be made to keep on living.

Also available this month is Magicka 2 on PS4. This spell-slinging action game empowers you and your friends with the elements to defeat your enemies (or sabotage those same friends). Hysterics may ensue, which might be a welcome break after all those zombies…

These PS4 games are free for PlayStation Plus members starting on the first Tuesday of November, and you can find the full list of PlayStation Plus games below. Enjoy!

Full Lineup:

  • The Walking Dead: Season 2, PS4
  • Magicka 2, PS4

Civilization Revolution 2 Plus Comes to PS Vita December 3rd

Hi, I’m Joe Faulstick from 2K – and I’m excited to officially reveal that we’ve been working hard on bringing a great, strategic experience to PS Vita on December 3 with Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution 2 Plus.

If you’re not familiar with the Civilization Revolution games, but love turn-based strategy, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Basically, in Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution 2 Plus, you can build up a civilization from scratch with an interface designed specifically for touchscreens and consoles, or follow along with specific scenarios and see how well you fair against historical world leaders.

Civilization Revolution 2 Plus on PS Vita

Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution 2 Plus, coming exclusively to PS Vita, introduces a number of scenarios, units and world leaders coming from Japan’s history that you won’t find anywhere else.

In one particular scenario (“Journey to the West”), you’ll use TaiZong against Saladin (AI) to capture Byzantium. The other scenarios, “Wrath of Emperor Kublai,” “Samurai Invasion of Korea,” “Z-flag Swirls,” and “Dark Clouds in the Pacific” all take place at different points in Japanese history.

And the same goes for the new Japanese leaders we introduce in this game:

  • Oda Nobunaga: Focused on medieval era/samurai bonus
  • Heihachiro Togo: Naval combat related bonuses
  • Himiko: More diplomatic related, governmental related bonuses

Civilization Revolution 2 Plus on PS VitaCivilization Revolution 2 Plus on PS Vita

Personally, my favorite is the new Japanese unit – the Yamato battleship. If you’re a history buff like me (or just have fond memories of the Anime, Space Battleship Yamoto / Star Blazers), this unit is particularly cool.

For reference, the Yamato class ships of Imperial Japanese Navy World War II battleships were feared on the open sea. They were the heaviest and most powerfully armed battleships ever constructed, displacing 72,800 tons at full load and armed with nine 46 cm (18.1 inch) 45 Caliber Type 94 main guns. (From Wikipedia). In our game though, the Yamato has much improved attack strength, at the cost of compromised defense capability, compared to normal battleships.

Anyway, if you’re ready to conquer the world, one bus stop (or plane ride) at a time, keep an eye on PlayStation Store‎ for Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution 2 Plus.

Learning the Ropes in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End Multiplayer

The brutal pace and ferocious gunplay in the Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End multiplayer suite was recently detailed by one of Naughty Dog’s Lead Game Designers Robert Cogburn here on PlayStation.Blog. But his team’s work was perhaps best showcased by this increasingly out-of-control footage that debuted during the PlayStation press conference at Paris Games Week. Uncharted 4 drew long lines on the show floor as players sampled the competitive component for the first time, and I was happily among them.

This early build of Uncharted 4 competitive packed in characters from across the Uncharted series — a crucial pillar in Naughty Dog’s approach to multiplayer this time around. Nate, Sully, Elena, Cutter, and other familiar faces smirked and scowled from the loading screen. Although the final version of the game will have a more robust loadout editor, I picked “support” (I do love being helpful) and brought Elena into the field (#TeamElena).

As Cogburn illustrated in his post, the biggest new additions to the Uncharted multiplayer are the Sidekicks, Mysticals, and the grappling hook. All things that I failed at using properly while being shot in the neck. Matches are immediately compelling, as teams move through maps together and establish “fronts” in order to exchange fire and explosives with the opposing side.

Uncharted 4, Image 09Uncharted 4, Image 08

This highlights Naughty Dog’s map design, which facilitates intense battles between sides and an ever-changing firefight that makes nearly every moment worthwhile. Ducking and weaving behind cover, opening fire on your enemies, leaping from the lethal range of a grenade — all of it felt great right from the start.

As was the case with previous Naughty Dog games, Uncharted 4 demands teamwork (and competency) from its players. A team of stray soldiers will be gunned down in seconds, whereas a coordinated group can move fluidly through cover, help downed friendlies, and survive the match much more efficiently.

Uncharted 4, Image 11

The Paris Games Week demo only scratched the surface of what Uncharted 4 multiplayer has to offer. If you want to try it for yourself, you can play the beta on December 4th with a purchase of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, or swing by PlayStation Experience in San Francisco and come play with us! I’ll be the one dying a lot.

Happy Halloween From Until Dawn and Supermassive Games

Hi everyone, I’m pleased to be back on the PlayStation.Blog to give you a heads up about how we’re celebrating Halloween with Until Dawn.

The latest update to Until Dawn has added 11 hidden pumpkins throughout the game that will only appear around Halloween. We’re challenging you to find them all. They aren’t all easy to find and you might have to move the camera around to spot all of them. If you find one, take a screenshot and tag it with #UntilDawnPumpkin. We’ll be keeping an eye on how many people spot them and will retweet some of our favourites – so get searching!

We’ll also be doing a Director’s Commentary live-stream on October 30th through the PlayStation Events introduced in version 3.0 of the system software. Tune in towatch us play Until Dawn and talk about how we created certain scenes and what we were trying to achieve.

The guys at PlayStation have also created a new Until Dawn theme for PS4 being released for free just in time for Halloween.

Have a happy Halloween all!

ALIENATION Update: Xeno Forces Invade Paris Games Week

Hi PlayStation fans,

After invading E3 earlier this year, Xenos have now descended upon Paris Games Week. So many exciting announcements have been made that I think I might even have died and gone to heaven already!

Playing Alienation live on stage at the PlayStation press conference was initially a somewhat terrifying prospect. The game was so cool to play on that huge screen that after just a few seconds of play I never wanted it to end!

Our goal for Alienation is simply to create the definitive top-down shooter with awesome visual effects and layers of gameplay that will keep you coming back for more.

The game is designed to encourage players to work together, combining their skills and firepower to avoid getting caught in a situation as shown in the image below.

Alienation

In Alienation, up to four players can join forces online, each assuming the role of a Bio-Specialist, Exo-Skeleton or Saboteur. There are tons of things to shoot and loot as you blast Xenos in chaotic firefights in order to complete a variety of interesting mission objectives and campaign goals, designed with collaboration in mind.

Here is a trailer that we created to show you more…

If you watch the trailer very carefully you might just spot a secret cypher that we’ve not been able to decode ourselves and would love to hear about on Twitter at #alienationps4.

Another highlight of the week for me was of course the announcement of yet another new Housemarque game called MatterFall that I have seen brought to life from sketches made by our artists made just a few months back.

Last but not least, the positive feedback and recognition that our friends at PlayStation extended to Housemarque during the presentation is hugely appreciated.

It really is an amazing coincidence that the 20th anniversary of both PlayStation and Housemarque are in the same year and it is a huge privilege for me to work with such amazingly talented people, both at Housemarque and PlayStation.

Shadow of the Beast Update, New Trailer From Paris Games Week

Hi PlayStation fans,

It’s been a great week for gaming news! Lots of wonderful announcements from Paris Games Week, and so many things to look forward to. We’re once again humbled that Sony asked for our game, Shadow of the Beast, to be in attendance amongst such illustrious company.

Shadow of the Beast

Shadow of the BeastShadow of the Beast

On the gameplay side, we’ve been very lucky to get lots of feedback from people who took the time to play our previous demo at various shows, and we’ve been working out how best to use that to improve the game. To that end, we’ve been iterating and tweaking our combat system further, as well as making adjustments to help the platforming flow better. We’re trying our best to make sure that the combat in particular has layers to discover and that truly mastering the game is going to be something players can enjoy doing as they uncover the secrets of Aarbron’s world.

So with immense nervousness, but quiet excitement, we’d like to share a new trailer with you. Hopefully fans of the original game will spot a few nods to familiar locations, and also some new things to make the return to Karamoon an exciting prospect!

Thank you again for looking at the game, we’re still working hard to improve it and hope to share more news with you as soon as we can.

Yours gratefully,
Matt and the team at Heavy Spectrum

The Full Story Behind Nier: Automata on PS4

Earlier in the year at E3, we unveiled a brand new game in the Nier franchise coming exclusively to PS4 in 2016. Today, we’re proud to unveil not only the official title of the game but also first ever gameplay footage!

NieR: Automata

I’m sure you guys have lots of questions about Nier: Automata, so let’s get you all up to speed.

What is Nier: Automata?

The original Nier is a very unique action RPG that struck a chord with many passionate gamers when it came out five years ago. The story revolves around the main protagonist Nier as he searches for a cure for his daughter who is infected with the Black Scrawl virus, a seemingly incurable disease.

To this day, gamers around the world still talk about Nier fondly and the soundtrack and design book are still selling so there’s clearly something special about it. If you haven’t played the original Nier, do try and track down a copy because it has one of the most memorable and emotional casts, stories, and music in recent memory.

Nier: Automata is the next game in the Nier franchise and it’s a collaboration between Square Enix and PlatinumGames. You probably recognize PlatinumGames’ distinct action style in the gameplay trailer but if you look closely, you’ll be able to spot gameplay elements from the original Nier as well. It’s still an action RPG so don’t worry if you want more RPG mechanics in the game, they’re still there!

What is the story in Nier: Automata?

Earth has suddenly been invaded by beings from another planet and mechanical life forms with overwhelming power were used as weapons of war which forced mankind to flee to the moon. In order to take back the earth, a resistance force of android warriors has been created by humanity to fight these invaders.

The world that you see in Nier: Automata is one where androids and mechanized weapons clash in ferocious combat in a barren and deserted wasteland. It’s set after the original game but the story is written in a way which means you don’t have to have played the first one.

NieR: Automata

The world/universe is still linked between the two Nier games though so if you have played the original, you will no doubt recognize some of the locations and characters who may or may not be returning. The locations in particular will look different as they’re now more like ruins after the alien invasion but there will also be areas where you get the sense of a very advanced civilization.

Most of the story is still shrouded in mystery though so there’s more to look out for and discover further down the line.

Who is the female character in the gameplay trailer?

She’s not actually female, or maybe it’s more accurate to say she’s not actually human. Her name or serial number is 2B and she’s an android. In the world of Nier, there are strict rules meaning this kind of android is not allowed to have emotions. However, each different model has its own quirks and characteristics and 2B has a comparatively cold and level headed personality.

Keen fans and eagle-eyed readers might have noticed that at the end of the E3 announcement trailer there were three words that popped up — “doll,” “human,” and “machine” so there were hints from the start…

Who is behind Nier: Automata?

Fans of the original Nier will be happy to know that all of the key members of the creative team are back for Nier: Automata! Below is a quick rundown of who is who on the team.

Yoko Taro (Creative Director) & Yosuke Saito (Producer)
I don’t think it would be a proper Nier game if Yoko Taro and Yosuke Saito weren’t involved! They are the original duo behind the first Nier game.

Keiichi Okabe (Composer)

Keiichi Okabe was the composer of the first Nier and the music is such an integral part to the game. It really helped shape and form the games identity so it was really important to the team to get Keiichi Okabe on board for Nier: Automata.

NieR: Automata

NieR: AutomataNieR: Automata

Akihiko Yoshida (Character Designer)
Akihiko Yoshida has worked on many monumental Square Enix games like Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy XIV, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Vagrant Story among others.

Yosuke Saito actually suggested Akihiko Yoshida as the character designer for Nier: Automata as a crazy idea as expected him to say no and turn the idea down. Yoko Taro is also a big fan of his work and as luck would have it, the CEO of the company that Mr. Yoshida is affiliated with is a hardcore Nier fan so this really helped getting him on board with Nier: Automata!

PlatinumGames (Developer)

Of course, I should give a special mention to the team at PlatinumGames who are developing the game! You’re probably already aware of who they are but they’re the developers behind incredible games such as Vanquish and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Yoko Taro describes them as “really young, talented hotshots” and when it comes to action gameplay, they are world class, so it’s super exciting to see their contributions to the gameplay.

Yoko Taro also moved to Osaka for this project and practically lives in the PlatinumGames studio which is about 400km away from his actual home. It’s all for the greatness that is Nier: Automata though!

So that is a brief introduction to Nier: Automata! I hope you guys like what you’ve seen so far. There’s plenty more to show and talk about the game so do keep an eye out for future updates. If you’ve got any questions, I’ll be sure to try my best to answer them in the comments.

Wild on PS4 is an Open-World Game with Startling Possibility

Earlier this week in Paris, famed game creator Michel Ancel presented the upcoming open world Wild with a deep-set grin. His enthusiasm and passion for the project echo in Wild’s dizzying vistas, and his team’s purpose is clear: empower players to traverse a beautiful, dangerous world. Let them attune with the forces of nature. And grant them dominion over animals of all shapes and sizes.

Wild

In Wild, players live life as a male or female shaman, fighting to survive a world rife with predators, poison, and even bone-wearing cannibals. Ancel’s goal is to begin the story when the shaman is young, and follow him as his power and experience grows over time. With each new animal that the shaman learns to control, a new tattoo is etched across the character’s skin. This will help showcase a player’s experience where multiplayer is concerned. Different shamans will display their spiritual wisdom with different markings.

As some may have seen during the PlayStation press conference at Paris Games Week, the shaman will come to understand new animal types by communing with powerful animal divinities. We’ve seen the serpent divinity so far, manifested as a seductive, cunning woman spotted with scales. These divinities will ask things of the shaman in exchange for their power, from making a sacrifice to living life as their animal subjects. These meetings (and their subsequent trials) will surely be a highlight of Wild’s open-ended gameplay.

WildWild

But Ancel wants to ensure that they avoid the common RPG structure that so many players have come to expect. The “Do X to be a good guy” direction is avoided in favor of complete player choice. Will the shaman start life by learning to control small animals like frogs? Or will he work harder to master stronger animals like wolves or bears? The choice is entirely up to the player.

The moment to moment play in Wild is a mix of survival and exploration. Players can traverse the land as the shaman, or call animal companions to ride (like the bear we saw in Paris). The shaman can also “possess” animals that he has previously mastered, seeing the world from their unique perspectives. Observe far-off terrain from the eyes of a hawk, or scout cannibal tribes undetected as a rabbit. Players can even lure predators by controlling sheep. But leave the shaman’s body unprotected, and death may come swiftly while his spirit is away.

Wild

Wild is still early in development, and Ancel did not show multiplayer in Paris. He notes that he’s been inspired by the multiplayer element of Bloodborne, and he hopes to bring similar ideas to Wild, like enabling gamers to invite other players into their worlds to either help or hinder their progress.

Wild is gorgeous in both its visuals and its creative vision. As Ancel’s team continues to build out the world, the promise of the shaman’s journey grows — and we eagerly await meeting new divinities who will grant us dominion over the wild.

Dead Secret Delivers Dread to PS4 & PS3 in January

Who killed Harris Bullard?
Delve into a dead man’s bizarre past to solve the mystery of his death before you become the next victim. Dead Secret will land on PS4 and PS3 in January 2016 and later on PlayStation VR.

Harris Bullard, a reclusive man with a mysterious past, was found dead in his study five days ago. Nobody suspects foul play, least of all the police. But you know better — this is murder, and it’s up to you to prove it. Designed for console and VR, Dead Secret is a mystery thriller in which you play as an ambitious journalist on a mission to make headlines. To get the story, you’ll have to comb the crime scene for clues and decipher the mystery of Bullard’s twisted past. Uncover secret documents, explore the dead man’s home, and piece together the puzzle to name the killer. But keep your wits about you — Bullard took his secrets to the grave, and somebody wants them to stay there.

Dead SecretDead Secret

Dead Secret has been in development for several years. The project began in 2013 and has gone through many iterations and mutations. In 2014, the team at Robot Invader decided to focus on VR, a change which required them to rip Dead Secret apart and piece it back together bit by bit. The result is a uniquely hybrid game, one designed specifically for virtual reality yet firmly connected to its console roots.

Dead Secret is also the product of many years of research into the inner workings of horror and mystery games. Chris Pruett and Casey Richardson, founders of Robot Invader, were deeply influenced by titles such as Clock Tower, Siren, and Deadly Premonition. “Casey and I have been thinking and writing about scary game design for over a decade,” Pruett said. “Dead Secret is focused on mystery, but we made sure that there’s a hefty dose of dread in there too.” Pruett describes Dead Secret as “something of a love letter” to classic horror and mystery games. “It’s a game anybody can play and enjoy, but I hope that fans of the genre will be particularly delighted.”

Dead Secret will arrive on PS4 and PS3 in January 2016 with Cross Buy support. The PlayStation VR version will launch later in the year.

Gravity Rush 2 Coming to North America on PS4

Hi, PlayStation fans. In addition to Gravity Rush Remastered coming to PS4 in February next year, I’m excited to announce Gravity Rush 2 is also coming to North America, exclusively PS4.

In the sequel to the acclaimed PS Vita original, you’ll have brand new gravity-shifting options and combat mechanics at your disposal. Kat can now use three gravity styles that add more variety and combat options: Normal, Lunar, and Jupiter.

In Lunar style, the force of gravity is reduced, making Kat lighter and quicker. In Jupiter style, gravity is increased, slowing down Kat’s movements but making her more powerful. You can switch between Kat’s three gravity styles seamlessly to combine the styles into different combos for each situation.

Also new to Gravity Rush 2 is the Tag Battle system which pairs you up with an AI-controlled ally to take on the more serious opposition like Raven assisting Kat.

For all you fans who can’t get enough, Japan has a slightly extended gameplay trailer with a bit more footage of the various gravity styles and combat.

That’s all we can say for now, so I’ll leave the concluding words to Gravity Rush creative director Toyama-san himself, who has a message for you:

As you saw from the footage during the Paris Games Week press conference, you’ll be able to mix and match a wide variety of combat styles any way you want, so there’ll be enough action to please Gravity veterans and new players alike. And of course, there’s a whole lot more we haven’t shown you yet, so stay tuned!
