Introducing Players’ Choice Awards: Vote for the Best Game of January 2018

Hot off our 2017 PlayStation.Blog Game of the Year Awards, we’ve been looking for new ways to recognize the very best games on PlayStation platforms.

So we decided to ask the real experts: you! Today, we’re launching Players’ Choice, a new game-of-the-month award decided by players.

How does it work? On the last day of every month, PlayStation.Blog will open a poll where you can vote for the best new game released that month. Seven days later, we’ll close the polls and announce the winner on PlayStation.Blog. PlayStation Store will also showcase some top Players’ Choice winners will throughout the year.

What is the voting criteria? That’s up to you! If you were only able to recommend one new release to a friend that month, which would it be? In keeping with our long tradition in the Game of the Year Awards, remastered or re-released games won’t qualify. Larger-scale rebuilds and remakes like Shadow of the Colossus and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy will.

How are nominees decided? The PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation Store editorial teams will gather a list of that month’s most noteworthy releases and use it to seed the poll. Write-in votes will be accepted.

Time to get started! Tell us: what was the best game of January 2018?

Horror Roguelike The Persistence Lands on PS VR July 24

Hello, PlayStation VR fans! Stuart Tilley, Game Director at Firesprite here with some exciting news. I’m pleased to announce that The Persistence will be releasing on PlayStation VR on July 24, 2018! What’s more, there’s a new trailer to check out, as well as a pre-order discount for PlayStation Plus members.

If you don’t know much about The Persistence just yet, here are five things that will make you an expert.

1. Dying Isn’t the End

The Persistence

The Persistence is a roguelike, and chances are you are going to die a lot. You play as Security Officer Zimri Eder. Well, sort of. With each new life, you play as a fresh clone with her Engrams (her memories and personality) restored. With each new life comes the opportunity to re-sequence her DNA to create more powerful clones in the future.

The game is set aboard The Persistence, a colony ship that suffers a malfunction during a jump, landing it in the inexorable pull of a black hole, wreaking havoc on the ship and corrupting the Clone Printer, which is now creating mutated copies of your ex-shipmates.

You are the last survivor. Your mission? Restore functionality to The Persistence and somehow make your way back to Earth.

2. Stealth is Your Friend

The Persistence

The Persistence is totally overrun, and these mutants won’t think twice about beating you to a pulp. Keep out of sight and out of trouble, leaning-and-peeking in PS VR to stay aware of dangers, perhaps taking time to learn enemy behaviors and coming up with new tactics for your next run.

The Persistence

Movement uses smooth FPS controls, so getting around is really easy, and you’re equipped with a short-range teleporter which is perfect for moving stealthily between cover.

3. You Can Fight Back

The Persistence

If you prefer to be the hunter rather than the hunted, you’ll want to seek out weapon fabricators. Here, you can purchase any of the 20 different weapons carried onboard, including firearms, melee, and even some top-secret experimental ‘dark matter’ powered prototypes!

You can upgrade each of them, and you’ll need to as you explore deeper into the dark and terrifying depths of The Persistence.

4. Every Life is Different

The automated deck-configuring system has also been corrupted, so every time you die or activate the teleporter between decks, the layout of the ship changes. Every life plays out differently, with different enemies to face, items to find and weapons to buy and upgrade. Taking time to understand the ever-changing world around you is crucial to staying alive.

Deadly hazards are likely to get the better of you if aren’t paying attention, so learn to use them to your advantage. Try presenting yourself as tasty human bait to lure a mutant over an explosive floor plate for an easy kill!

5. You Can Call Your Friends

The Persistence

Your friends can help out by connecting to the game (local play only) with their phone or tablet and hacking into Solex, the ship’s engineering system.

Once connected, players get powerful control over the game, including abilities to lure enemies, open doors, and disable traps. By helping you, your friends can upgrade their Solex system to unlock even more powers, like the ability to freeze enemies to help you escape.

But beware, sometimes your friends get big rewards if you die! With the ability to spawn new enemies and make them attack, can you really trust your friends to help you out?

Pre-order The Persistence now, and receive a super cool concept art Avatar Pack of some of the mutants, and a discount if you are a PS Plus member.

Keep an eye on PlayStation.Blog for more details on The Persistence before launches on July 24.

Play This Next: What Remains of Edith Finch

Hi, everyone! We’re kicking off a new program in collaboration with PlayStation Store, where once in a while we’ll shine our editorial spotlight on a game we feel deserves more attention. We’re calling it Play This Next.

So, here we are with the first edition of PTN! I’m thrilled not only that I get to kick things off, but that I get to do so with one of the most moving experiences I had last year. If you enjoy narrative-driven gaming experiences, I implore you to play What Remains of Edith Finch!

What Remains of Edith Finch

Giant Sparrow’s more grown-up follow-up to The Unfinished Swan takes a decidedly darker tone than that of its predecessor, but it manages to maintain an underlying feeling of optimism throughout. An impressive feat, considering that the story revolves around various generations of your family kicking the bucket. What Remains of Edith Finch is a tale of juxtapositions: somber, yet hopeful; disturbing, yet comforting. It’s one of 2017’s most endearing stories, and a true must-play.

Watch the video above for a taste of the adventure that awaits, or head to PlayStation Store to see how the story plays out for yourself.

Interdimensional Parkour Racer Sprint Vector Dashes to PS VR Next Month

Ready player…RUN! We are so excited to announce a final release date for Survios’ multiplayer adrenaline platformer Sprint Vector, first previewed on PlayStation VR at Paris Games Week 2017. Now, Sprint Vector is blasting onto PS4 for PlayStation VR on February 13th, 2018!

TITLE

Intuitive, addictive, competitive

Sprint Vector sends its intrepid contestants, running, jumping, climbing, flinging, drifting, and even flying across interdimensional 8-player race courses and challenge maps where your speed and finesse are put to the test.

Race in competitive online 8-player matches with global leaderboards, or invite your friends into a private match for a little friendly competition. Master 12 colorful, complex race tracks and nine solo challenge courses, or go at your own pace with customisable game settings for a more casual, free-running experience.

TITLE

Go with the flow: introducing fluid locomotion

At Survios, we have a pretty simple design philosophy: “Why not?” It allows for a lot of fun experimentation because it presents obstacles as opportunities. Which brings us to Exhibit A: locomotion, a constant issue since VR’s inception.

We wanted to make a game where you could go absurdly fast, have complete agency over how you move, and feel capable of doing anything – so we set out to build a new way to move in VR while addressing all the pre-conceived notions of speed-induced nausea.

TITLE

Sprint Vector’s Fluid Locomotion system and intuitive intended motion mechanics let you comfortably attain and maintain extreme speeds in VR.

Fluid Locomotion consists of smooth, natural arm motions and simple mechanics, which make its mechanics easy to learn and addictively fun to master. And in the process of conceptualising the game that would fully utilize Fluid Locomotion, we created a physically active, mentally challenging, ridiculously fun new virtual reality genre.

We’re so excited to welcome all you prospective new elite athletes to Sprint Vector, a brand new, high-octane adrenaline platformer that sends you rocketing through colorful space-punk landscapes as the star of an intergalactic parkour game show.

Start warming up now–your time in the spotlight is coming! For the best resources to attain maximum performance, check out www.SprintVector.com and join the official Survios Discord to chat with Vectorheads and devs alike. And be sure to follow Survios on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to see everything our studio is up to in all areas of VR.

Puzzle Shooter Cold Iron Launches Today for PlayStation VR

Will you destroy it before it destroys you? That’s the central question of Cold Iron, a journey through the Weird West starring a tragic gunslinger and a demon-infested revolver. It’s an odyssey that takes you through the past, present, and future as you duel against a diverse cast of bosses. More than anything, it’s a puzzle shooter. That means raw speed won’t be enough: your eyes, ears, and mind will be put to the test!

Cold Iron for PS VR

Cold Iron for PS VRCold Iron for PS VR

The odds are against you, but you’ve got a secret weapon: Cold Iron. If that’s not enough, here are six tips that will turn any greenhorn into a real gunslinger.

The devil’s in the details

Keep an eye out for each enemy’s unique mechanics. A seasoned gamer may be able to overwhelm the first duelist or two with expert speed and accuracy, but you’ll soon find that no two challenges are alike. Be on the lookout for unusual colors, sounds, and patterns, and you’ll arm yourself with everything you need to overcome even the trickiest opponents.

Shoot from the hip

Your father was the fastest gun in the West. Make him proud by shooting like a real cowboy. Instead of staring down the sights, try shooting from the hip. With this technique, you’ll make a quick motion with your wrist and fire before your opponent can unholster. It takes practice, but the reward is worth it!

Don’t be intimidated

Playing Cold Iron is like defusing a bomb with a gun. A puzzle that might seem simple on paper becomes much more challenging when you have less than a second to solve it before you’re obliterated by a massive robot. That tension is the magic of Cold Iron, and it’s exactly what we mean when we say it challenges your mind, body, and soul.

Understand the X’s and O’s

All this talk of speed and puzzles might make Cold Iron sound like a game where aim is irrelevant and spray-and-pray goes unpunished. It’s not! Whenever you lose a round as a result of missing, watch for the white X’s that appear on screen. They show where you missed so you can correct your aim. Missing low every time? You’re probably firing too early.

On the other hand, the perfect shot will make a green circle appear on the results screen. Usually a headshot will do the trick, but you’ll have to be more creative with inhuman enemies. Bullseyes are worth tons of extra points, so practice perfect aiming if you’re trying to collect every golden statue and unlock… well, you’ll see!

Take a break!

Cold Iron is designed from the ground up to be playable for everyone: the controls are simple, the difficulty curve is smooth, and the visuals are tuned for maximum comfort in virtual reality… but the enemies and challenges you’ll face are anything but simple. It’s easy to doubt your abilities after a few losses, but instead of banging your head against a (virtual) wall, take a break and try again later. You’ll find that just a few minutes will help your mind and muscles relax.

Cold Iron for PS VRCold Iron for PS VR

I know what you’re thinking. “Did he give six tips or only five?” Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I lost track myself. But being this is Cold Iron, the first virtual reality puzzle shooter, you’ll need a lot of luck or a lot of skill. So ask yourself one question: “Do I feel lucky?” Well, do ya, punk?

Fast-Paced Shooter Bleed 2 Launches Next Week on PS4

Get ready to run-and-gun like you’ve never runned-and-gunned before! We’ve lit the fuse on Bleed 2 and the super slick mach-speed shooter starring pink-haired heroine Wryn is set to launch like a firework of pure exploding joy on 7th February!

To get you fully prepped for its arrival, here are five things you need to know about Bleed 2…

1. Bosses! Bosses! Bosses!

GAMETITLE

The action in Bleed 2 is caps lock INTENSE! From start to finish there’s hardly a second to catch your breath. And a large part of that breathless action is spent going toe-to-toe with bosses. There are over 25 to test your mettle against. My personal fave? Easy. The ‘Kitty Chopper’ – an attack helicopter piloted by cats.

2. There’s so much game to game (Part One)!

GAMETITLE

So, you power though Bleed 2’s Story Mode in a single supersonic sitting of frenzied pink fury. What next? You’re just getting started. There are seven levels to best with an S-Rank across four difficulties. Then, when your mind has transcended to a state of perfect Zen focus, there are the SSS-Ranks, which demand nothing less than perfection in three disciplines: Time (don’t dally), Damage (don’t get hit) and Style (don’t forget to taunt).

3. There’s so much game to game (Part Two)!

GAMETITLE

And once Story Mode has submitted to your superior skills, you’ve got Arcade Mode (complete the game with a single life!), Challenge Mode (take on up to three bosses at once!), and the all-new Endless Mode (rampage through randomly-generated levels!) to keep you blissfully busy.

And when you’ve done all that, shucks, do it again but different with one of the unlockable characters! Oh, and there’s also local co-op for all modes, so you can grab a buddy, hunker your butts down on a couch and get your Bleed 2 on together!

4. Dash! Distort! Deflect! Dodge! Dispatch!

GAMETITLE

Master the five Ds to avoid defeat!

  • Dash: the ultimate in mid-air manoeuvrability, Wryn can triple-jump her way through the skies in a dazzling display of dexterity.
  • Distort: bend and defy the actual laws of temporal velocity to slow-down time.
  • Deflect: Wryn can use her katana to deflect deadly pink projectiles away from her.
  • Dodge: Combine the previous Ds to dodge like a demon and avoid being hit. Dispatch: kill all the baddies!

5. Go full Bleed with the Complete Bundle

GAMETITLE

If you missed out on the first Bleed and want to give it a whirl, I’m delighted to be the bearer of awesome news because we’re also releasing the ‘Bleed Complete Bundle’ on the same day as Bleed 2. It’s both the Bleed games in one almighty package.

Thanks for reading and don’t forget the most important bit of info: Bleed 2 will be available 7th February. To stay up-to-date with Bleed 2 news, feel free to follow us on Twitter @DigeratiDM.

How EA Sports UFC 3 Ups its Game In and Out of the Octagon

EA Sports UFC 3 launches tomorrow on PS4! And this year’s entry will show off some potent new possibilities.

For instance, we’ve put major work into the animation system, which we’re calling Real Player Motion technology. RPM tech will make every move you make, and every strike you take, feel more realistic. With thousands of new striking animations, you can now combine your strikes with slips and lunges, so that you can perform each move while in motion.

EA Sports UFC 3

We also overhauled the damage system, which means that your positioning, stance, and vulnerability are critical factors. For example, your positioning on your opponent makes every punch an opportunity to finish the fight. Leave yourself open, however, and you could take a devastating counter blow.

Just like in the real Octagon, your fighter’s footwork is now at the forefront of every tactical encounter. RPM creates unique animations that replicate real fighter movements, allowing you to move across the mat, close gaps, and manage distance with seamless fluidity.

The action starts when you pick your favorite UFC fighter from across multiple weight divisions in our launch roster. In close collaboration with the UFC, we selected the top-rated fighters from eight male divisions and two female divisions, popular legends of the sport, as well as up-and-coming talent. We think it’s our best launch roster yet, but be sure to let us know your thoughts! Browse the full fighter roster here.

EA Sports UFC 3

For the first time in EA Sports UFC, the choices you make outside of the Octagon impact your path to greatness inside of the Octagon. Between each bout, you can make promotional choices that help you gain fans, build hype for your next fight, and earn more lucrative contracts from the UFC. How you promote outside of the Octagon matters just as much as how you perform inside of it — if you want to become the greatest of all time.

Build your fan base, create heated rivalries, and interact with them all on the new in-game social media platform. The choice is yours: Will you be the hot-headed contender, or the cool, calm, and collected champion?

Updated Suite of Multiplayer Modes

Get your friends together, pick a fighter, and step into the Octagon with one of these multiplayer modes:

Stand and Bang: Hone your stand-up skills as you fight your opponent toe-to-toe without the risk of having to grapple.
Knockout Mode: The rules to KO Mode are simple – both players start with the same amount of health, but with each devastating shot the health bar decreases. It’s a perfect way to hone your defensive abilities.
Submission Showdown: Only true skill can master the mat. Hone your ground game in this submission mode.
Custom Fight: Tune and adjust everything including stamina, transition speed, submission speed, grapple advantage, damage, health recovery, and perks to create your ideal bout.
Tournament Mode: The ultimate game mode for a group of friends. Choose your fighter and see how many opponents you can finish in a King of the Hill style tournament mode.

What’s more, you can get the Ultimate Octagon experience with EA Sports UFC 3 Champions Edition. In addition to getting three days early access to the full game, you get one permanent Champion Fighter and more in Ultimate Team.

EA Sports UFC 3

Choose between the five UFC 3 Champion fighters to permanently add to your UFC 3 Ultimate Team Lineup, including: Conor McGregor, Demetrious Johnson, Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Georges St. Pierre, and Anderson Silva.

You will also receive an array of bonus content, too. Get full details here.

See you in the Octagon!

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT Out Today

Today marks the launch of Dissidia Final Fantasy NT! To celebrate, we wanted to answer the timeless question: what’s the best Final Fantasy?

This single question causes so much debate. I had the distinct pleasure of asking some of our most famed Final Fantasy developers in Japan what the best entry in the series is, and why.

The developers’ comments are listed in alphabetical order…

Akihiko Matsui
The Best: Final Fantasy II
Why: Both the character development system that allowed a high level of freedom and the dramatic scenario were superb; even looking back on it now, it’s a masterpiece. It may be safe to say that the Final Fantasy series didn’t turn into a small collection of works because of Final Fantasy II. It was also because of this game, that I aspired to take part in the production of video games myself.

Akitoshi Kawazu
The Best: Final Fantasy V
Why: [It has the] best battle system.

Hajime Tabata
The Best: Final Fantasy
Why: As a player, you are suddenly thrown into the world of the game, but as you progress, you begin to see the story, and the title appears on screen along with beautiful music. The gameplay style and direction/presentation shown in this sequence is essentially the starting point for Final Fantasy. After taking on a mainline title myself, I understand this, more than ever.

Hiroaki Kato
The Best: Final Fantasy Tactics
Why: The world of Ivalice and the job system are superb!

Ichiro Hazama
The Best: Final Fantasy VI
Why: The visuals using sprite artwork are beautiful and unparalleled, and the music is also fantastic. As we all know, it’s the best. The story for each and every character is drawn out in detail, and just the overall level of perfection as a piece of work is over the top. This title is what made me interested in the company called Square.

Motomu Toriyama
The Best: Final Fantasy XIII
Why: Because I can confront any powerful enemy if I’m with Lightning, the strongest heroine.

Naoki Yoshida
The Best: Final Fantasy III & Final Fantasy VII
Why: Rather than these titles being what I consider to be the best, I consider Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy III to be the most impactful. As for Final Fantasy VII, the content of the game was impactful on all vectors, from the visual expression seen back then, to the universe, character design, and volume of content. The power this title holds is similar to MMORPGs, and it’s precisely worthy of being called “the game that has it all”.

As for Final Fantasy III, I consider it a masterpiece in terms of the “game experience” since it essentially completed the Final Fantasy system from the early stages, such as the job system and active time battle. I feel like these two Final Fantasy titles serve as an origin, the reason the Final Fantasy series continues to this day. I’d also like to continue creating games that stack up against these titles, so I’d like to ask for everyone’s continued support for the Final Fantasy series!

Shinji Hashimoto
The Best: Final Fantasy
Why: Although Final Fantasy VII was the first title I took part in, when you consider the franchise’s origin, it’s none other than the first title in the series. The first title that lead to Final Fantasy’s 30th anniversary, the “Warrior of Light,” it was a profoundly memorable encounter.

Takashi Katano
The Best: Final Fantasy V
Why: The job system was so outstanding and fun that I put many hours into this game.

Takashi Tokita
The Best: Final Fantasy IV
Why: The best Final Fantasy!? That’s an extremely difficult question… I haven’t played all of the Final Fantasy titles, but if I were to choose one, then it would have to be Final Fantasy IV. This is not only because it was the first Final Fantasy title that I was deeply involved in, but because it also shaped the basis for how I make games, with themes such as light, darkness, and the meeting and parting of characters. The fact that I was able to create its sequel “Final Fantasy IV: The After Years” was also quite moving.

Takeo Kujiraoka
The Best: Final Fantasy X
Why: I dwelled on the overwhelming emotion and sadness for about three days after the ending. While it was the first Final Fantasy title to be voiced, I felt that it had already perfected its usage. This was also the first game I played for more than 100 hours (and ended up playing 200 hours more after clearing the main game). I played through every single [piece of] content that was available.

Toshiyuki Itahana
The Best: Final Fantasy IX & Final Fantasy XIV
Why: Final Fantasy IX is the most memorable Final Fantasy title for me as a developer because it greatly impacted my designs. As a player, I would consider Final Fantasy XIV to be the best Final Fantasy title. I don’t think there is any other title in the MMO genre in which I can resonate with the game’s protagonist “Warrior of Light” to this degree, where I consider the in-game characters as friends, occasionally resent them, and feel delighted about meeting them once again. I feel like I’m living and crafting the future of this epic narrative in another world that truly exists along with other players.

Yoshinori Kitase
The Best: Final Fantasy V
Why: I like all the Final Fantasy games, but let me choose Final Fantasy V this time. It was the first Final Fantasy title I took part in, and here, you can find the job and ability system in its completed form!

Do any of the above responses surprise you? More importantly, what is your favorite Final Fantasy, and why? Let us know in the comments below!

Regardless of your differences of opinion between your family and friends, finally you can determine which Final Fantasy is best in Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, available today. In case reading through that didn’t get you hyped enough, we wanted to celebrate some of the highlights of Dissidia Final Fantasy NT this past year in the US with our launch trailer above. Join the fight.

Also, if you weren’t aware, an original theme is available for purchase!
