Headlander Out Today on PS4, Explore the Score

I was an impressionable six year old out camping when I first heard Vangelis. Some family friends brought a tape of a radio show called Hearts of Space and “To the Unknown Man” was playing. Instead of sleeping, I found myself staring up at the stars with my imagination going wild.

That music was the catalyst for an insatiable appetite for electronic music during my childhood. I was a rabid fan of Isao Tomita, Wendy Carlos, Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel Jarre, and later the weirder stuff by Xenakis and Stockhausen.

When I heard that Headlander was following a retro-future narrative inspired by Logan’s Run, Silent Running, Zardoz, and other 70’s sci-fi, I simply tapped my already fiercely nostalgic mind for content. I knew what influences I had to honor in this score, and knew what tools I was going to have to use to satisfy my needs. Right off the bat, I decided on using tape and analog synthesizers. I’d still use my software of choice, Logic Pro, but mostly just as a recording device.

In Headlander, there are nods to Vangelis when you walk the halls of the Pleasure Port. When Grid Clash begins, you will hear Wendy Carlos inspired fanfare. When you get to the Computer Core, you’ll hear the more avant-garde colors of Stockhausen and Xenakis. Behind the walls of the pleasure port, you’ll hear an ambient score that is referencing Brian Eno. I love this era of electronic music dearly, and I want to reintroduce the world to these colors and aesthetics while visiting this alternate timeline.

I needed the right tools for the era, so I borrowed, rented, and bought some tools for the task. I acquired some modern takes on vintage synths. I am using A Prophet 8, Moog Voyager, Dave Smith Mono-evolver, Korg Monotron, and arp Odessey. I also was able to borrow some vintage synths from electronic music artists Jeff Taylor and Frank Garvey. These included the Yamaha CS15, Moog Voyager, Korg MS20, and a vintage Arp Odessey. I also used a Roland SH101, which is from 1983, yet stands tall amongst its older brothers. All are era-appropriate for the 70s, and I feel give the soundtrack an authenticity that I would not have achieved otherwise. For guitar work, I collaborated with Jay Rubin of Ghost Cat Studios.

The score is 70-80% analog. Originally I wanted to go for 100%, but the needs for the game outgrew this limitation. I also included Reaktor 6 and a couple of samplers for some tasks. I wanted to record everything to tape, but the limitations and idiosyncrasies of tape made it VERY hard to be light on my feet, so I used it more sparingly. In the walls of the Pleasure Port there is a song that is procedurally generated. I gave the computer some rules, attached some instruments, and went to make coffee while my computer made music for me. This was inspired by the generative music systems of Brian Eno and John Cage.

I hope that everyone who plays Headlander enjoys this soundtrack. I was honored to compose this score. These days, scores are often hybrids of orchestral and electronic elements, all striving to be modern and huge — I love to write this kind of music!

Headlander was a special treat, though. It’s a slice of my own personal nostalgia, my love letter to these giants of electronic music. Who knows — maybe if people love this soundtrack it will rekindle interest in the music that inspired it.

I hope so.

Blitworks Brings Cannon Brawl to PS4 August 2

Hey everyone! Jorge Cabezas here, one of BlitWorks’ founders. You may have enjoyed some of the games we’ve ported to PlayStation: FEZ, Don’t Starve, Spelunky and Super Meat Boy, among others.

We want to keep the fun coming, so I have a cool announcement to make today: We’re bringing Cannon Brawl to PS4 on August 2nd. Just in time to refresh your summer!

Cannon Brawl is fun, addictive and frenetic. The general idea is to defend your castle while attacking your opponent’s. To do this, you’ll choose from and place a wide array of weapons while piloting an airship. All this happens in real-time, so the battle is intense, and every match evolves in a surprisingly different way.

There’s a campaign mode where you can learn the basic rules, but where the game really shines is when playing against your friends, either online or perhaps even better in the comfort and warm atmosphere of your couch.

Some key details:

  • Single player: You can play across 5 unique worlds unlocking 5 different characters and more than 15 weapons in the Campaign mode
  • Local and online multiplayer: Use all the weapons you gathered in amazing 1v1 battles
  • Destroyable terrain: With lasers, giant flamethrowers and huge cannons you’ll get to destroy the earth under your enemy’s feet!
  • Totally new genre: Original blend of 2D Artillery and RTS

All this wrapped up in a beautiful fantasy world with outstanding — though unexpected — music by Disasterpeace.

But this is not all; when Turtle Sandbox trusted their baby to us, we not only made sure the game runs butter smooth, we also upgraded the graphics to be full HD!

That’s all for now! See you on August 2nd. If you’ve got any questions or just want to say hi, you can find us on Twitter at @BlitWorks. We’re always happy to hear from you.

Summon Night 6: Lost Borders Coming to PS4, PS Vita in February 2017

As a gamer, it always bothered me that English-speaking gamers were denied the goodness of Summon Night. But making the connections required for an English license to happen is not a simple undertaking. But back in 2014, our madness paid off — the planets aligned, years of work paid off, and our karma glowed bright enough that we were able to license Summon Night 5 so we could finally release the first mainline Summon Night game in the United States.

It turned out Summon Night 5 was only the warmup — Summon Night 6: Lost Borders would be the main attraction, and would be our very first multi-platform release on PS4 and PS Vita.

Even 9 months before the Japanese release, it was clear that this was a beautiful, fun strategy RPG — and a Summon Night game, through and through. And it was extra special because the game celebrated the 15th anniversary of Summon Night; it would bring together many key characters from the whole series for one grand, trope-free romp.

Okay, I lied about the “trope-free” part. There are as many JRPG tropes as you would expect in Summon Night 6: Lost Borders — maybe more. But they’re as fun and funny as you would hope. The game centers on three main characters living in isolation. Their solitary routines are upended when people literally begin falling from the sky into their world. At first, they struggle to learn who the visitors are and why they dropped in, but as they unravel the mystery they learn the power of friendship, eventually using that power to help them overcome a dark secret that cuts to the heart of their reality.

The gameplay is classic Summon Night, but turbocharged and streamlined. The usual strategy grid is displayed when you move, but the characters are free to run anywhere within their movement range without being limited to the squares. The Summon magic is represented here, as expected, as are assists, but there’s a new huge Summon Burst type of attack that unleashes crazy devastation on enemies.

Terrain is expressed in 3D beautifully, as are the characters. And the ever-popular night conversations are available with more characters than ever to help develop strong ties with allies at the end of every chapter. Summon Night 6 also supports cross save, allowing the game to be played on both PS4 and PS Vita. And players will need that edge because the game is a replay beast, with more than a dozen endings to see.

There will, of course, be a regular retail release for the game with a case, disc, and even a physical manual, but what I’m really excited about is the Wonderful Edition I’ve put together for fans. I feel like it’s the best Collector’s Edition value in at least the last decade.

The Wonderful Edition eclipses anything I put together before, including my work at Working Designs. It’s, well… wonderful. The set includes the PS4 game with full-color disc label and full-color physical manual, a 200+ page hardcover art book with a dust jacket, a full 32-track soundtrack in a full CD case, one of three possible adorable 7″ plush (randomly inserted) of the sidekicks, four PVC coasters with the main characters and game logo, a huge 21″x30″ poster, and an awesome, enormous box it all comes in.

This special item will only be available from the Gaijinworks website via the pre-sale that opens today. The early birds will get a special price, and the pre-sale that reserves copies of this for fans closes forever on October 31 so we have time to get everything manufactured, shipped, and assembled in time for the game’s launch in February.

Whichever version you choose to play, whether PS4 or PS Vita, regular edition or Wonderful Edition, if you’re a JRPG fan you’re in for a rare treat that opens the door to a fantastic universe.

New Kingsglaive Final Fantasy XV Trailer Revealed

We’ve finally launched the Global Trailer! Get a preview of the full story of Kingsglaive Final Fantasy XV, complete with epic battle scenes! Final Fantasy fans, now’s the time to get excited for an entirely new cinematic adventure.

I’m very happy that Kingsglaive will be released theatrically in North America. With all the effort we put into the sound and music, we’re so happy that everyone can enjoy this in theaters starting on August 19.

Kingsglaive stands on its own and can be enjoyed without knowledge of the previous games. But if you play Final Fantasy XV there are many references in the game that you wouldn’t necessarily understand without watching the film. Kingsglaive depicts the events that lead into the game’s story, starting with the main character — Prince Noctis’ father, King Regis — fighting the enemy Empire.

Along with Final Fantasy XV, the main theme portrayed in Kingsglaive is the bond between father and son. While watching the film you’ll see the love they have for each other and understand the pressures of fulfilling the responsibility of being King.

It begins with society’s perception of the King and his responsibilities, and the many emotions involved. However, because Final Fantasy is a magical world, we’ve tried to make it understandable from an outsider’s point of view — someone who isn’t familiar with the Final Fantasy series.

We constantly challenge the Final Fantasy franchise — not just with this film, but also with the game itself. We faced the continuous challenge of expressing human emotion through computer graphics realistically. So we combined fantasy aspects with modern aspects to give Kingsglaive a realistic look. We hope you enjoy watching the film and experiencing a world never seen before, filled with action scenes only possible through advanced computer graphics.

The members of the production team are huge fans of Final Fantasy, which led us to the incorporation of nostalgic Final Fantasy elements throughout the film. If you’re a Final Fantasy fan, we challenge you to find them!

Kingsglaive Final Fantasy XV is coming to PlayStation Video on August 30.
